Dreams Buried on the Frontlines

After the International Society for Performance Improvement Europe Middle East Africa (ISPI/EMEA) conference in Istanbul in October 2015, I took a tour to Troy. We started out when it was still dark in Istanbul.  I had taken a taxi from the Police Training Center, where I was staying to a hostel on a tiny dank street in the old town to wait for the mini-bus.  An inebriated Turk kindly made me a cup of coffee as I waited outside in the dark and as he and another Turk spoke in broken English to a…See More

On Resilience

Resilience is another one of the concepts that has become very popular lately, especially in the management literature.  Resilience is the ability to recover one’s equilibrium, one’s balance, one’s ability to move forward and even thrive after a traumatic experience, after natural disaster, after war, after the death of a loved one, after a change in status or position, even after a lay-off or termination at work.  It is curious to me that resilience has become so popular in the management…See More

On Empathy and the Call to Action it Implies

In his video for the company Sure People on his website http://www.devinsingh.com/blog/2015/8/16/empathy-leadership-and-teaching#commentsWrapper=, Social theorist and religious scholar Devin Singh stresses the importance of empathy in academia and in business, an important topic that is being emphasized more recently. Empathy has become such a topic of concern in this increasingly selfish,…See More

"Unbreakable" and finding our authentic selves and true purpose in life

On his website, (http://www.devinsingh.com/blog/2015/8/20/unbreakable-purpose#commentsWrapper=)Social Theorist and Religious Scholar Devin Singh talks about the theme of finding one's purpose in M. Night Shyamalan's movie "Unbreakable." His blog prompted me to watch “Unbreakable” again after several years, this time with a new perspective, looking for the “finding one’s “purpose” theme threaded…See More

Playground: Realization of a Dream

Almost every day I would walk to work along the river.  I would walk down Banja Luka past the high school girls on the way to the Turkish High School, some of whom wore head coverings, down the long stairs toward the river.  I would always wonder when I saw a young girl covered and in conservative clothes walking with a friend in tight jeans and a revealing top how they reconciled their religious differences and what their parents must think.  I would walk along the river toward the…

Mobbing...the dream killer....

I had never heard of mobbing until I worked in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).  Apparently the term is common in Europe and especially in BiH where mobbing is a perennial problem.  The description below provides a clear definition of what it entails.  The sad part of the story is that mobbing is a common way of life in BiH according to what several Bosnians told me.  Managers commonly use this technique to gain control and to get rid of competitors or anyone who does not mindlessly follow…
